Things to do – First, its super easy to explore Frankfurt by foot or with the city's frequent trams. If you purchase the Frankfurt Card, which comes with 1 or 2-day options, you can use unlimited public transit (including the train to the airport) in addition to huge discounts at numerous museums and attractions.

Must see places in Frankfurt include the historic square of Römerberg, which is home to some of the best architecture in the old town, and Frankfurt Cathedral in Domplatz. Also, don't miss nearby Kleinmarkthalle (Food Hall) for some of the best meals you'll have in Frankfurt (see 'Where to eat and drink' below for our full list of recommendations). After lunch, take a stroll down Zeil, the main shopping street.

In addition to a banking, Frankfurt is known for its incredible museums. Located on the Museum Embankment on the other side of the Main River, the Städel Museum is one of the best. You'll be dazzled by colorful works by Kandinsky, Chagall, and Matisse among others. There are also plenty of gay themes on display from Max Beckmann as an elegant dandy in Self-portrait with Champagne Glass to Karl Hofer’s Two Friends highlighting gay life in 1920's Berlin.

A few other interesting things to do in Frankfurt include a visit to the German Stock Exchange (Deutsche Borse), Opera House (Alte Oper), and the romantic Iron Footbridge (Eiserner Steg) for epic skyline views and where many couples attach their love locks. This is also one of the best spots to watch sunset in Frankfurt.

Westin Grand Frankfurt

If you prefer to stay in the heart of Frankfurt's gay village, we highly recommend the fabulous Westin Grand. Like Le Meridien, the Westin brand is part of the gay-friendly Marriott Bonvoy portfolio of hotels, so you can rest assured your pink dollar is being well spent! In addition to the close proximity of the gay bars, the main shopping street and rainbow roundabout are just steps away.

For accommodations, the Westin Grand offers numerous choices from deluxe rooms to suites. The hotel is also pet-friendly which we love.
Moxy Frankfurt City Center

Centrally located less than a 10-minute walk from the Westin Grand, the Moxy Frankfurt City Center is another great option for the LGBTQ+ traveler. We include them on our list as they often host drag shows and promote themselves as a gay-friendly venue to both locals and visitors.
Sunny Side Up
Sunny Side Up

Where to eat and drink – For the perfect start to the day, take the tram to Harvey's or Sunny Side Up in Nordend for breakfast. Both are gay-friendly and have rainbow flags on the door confirming their welcoming stance. At Sunny Side Up, we particularly enjoy their strong coffee, açaí bowl, and pancakes with fresh fruit. The pancakes are so fluffy and the pistachio mousse is a nice surprise.

For lunch, centrally located Kleinmarkthalle is a must. This fantastic food hall is popular with locals and tourists, and it offers both stand-up and sit-down options in addition to takeaway. On the main level, Tel Aviv street food is noteworthy as is the sit-down Italian restaurant upstairs. We came here two days in a row as it's that good!

Before a night on the town, we highly recommend local restaurant Buchholz near Merianplatz. Serving German and Austrian cuisine with regional wine and beer, this cozy venue has some of the best schnitzels in Frankfurt. For dessert, don't miss the famous Kaiserschmarm with apple puree and vanilla ice cream.

Comeback Bar & Lounge

Where to find gay nightlife – Many of Frankfurt's best gay bars and clubs are located in the gay village centered around Alte Gasse. This is also where you'll find the rainbow top or roundabout. Locals affectionately call this area the "Bermuda Triangle," as bars are in close proximity to one another and open late if they close at all. Many travelers are known to disappear here for long stretches of time hence the nickname.

For one of the oldest gay bars in Frankfurt, Lucky's has a relaxed vibe and friendly, welcoming bartender. It's a great place to begin your night out in Frankfurt and make new friends. Karaoke is popular during the week as is the monthly bear party. For upcoming gay and fetish themed events across Frankfurt, check the countless fliers in the bathroom.

Just down the street and around the corner from Lucky's, you will find three of the best gay bars in Frankfurt: Bar Central and Tangerine are right next door to each other and Pink is just a few steps away. We found a sociable international crowd at Tangerine, so we would make this gay venue your next stop after Lucky's.

Comeback Bar & Lounge

To end the night, Comeback Bar & Lounge is definitely the most cruisy. We heard it's hit or miss, but we'll let you be the judge! It's only a few blocks away from the other gay bars, so it's worth popping in for a beer to see for yourself.

Other bi-weekly or monthly gay events to checkout depending on your travel dates include Atomic, Ballroom-Code Queer, Club Bizarre at Freud, Queertastic at Cafe Koz, and Pure Gay Clubbing.

Frankfurt Cathedral & Main River

When to go - Summer is without a doubt the best time to visit Frankfurt to enjoy the countless outdoor events and festivals. In August, Frankfurt Pride or Christopher Street Day (CSC) as it's known locally, and the Museum Embankment Festival are two hugely popular events with the LGBTQ+ community. During the holidays, don't miss the famous Christmas Markets held in the historic market square of Römerberg. If you prefer the shoulder season with less tourists and lower prices, April and May as well as September and October can also be quite appealing. For many LGBTQ+ travelers, you will likely be coming to Frankfurt for business, a trade fair, or perhaps stuck on a long layover, but don't worry. We have you covered. Travel Insurance – Don’t forget to add global travel medical insurance that covers you while traveling outside of your home country. We recommend Safety Wing. You can buy it even if you are already abroad. Most health coverage in the U.S. for example does not cover you in Mexico, thus it’s extremely important to protect yourself from out of pocket costs due to a medical emergency. We learned this the hard way which you can watch here. To learn more about Safety Wing, click here.

Car Rental – Should your travel plans call for hiring a car, we use rentalcars.com to search the best prices among the major car rental companies. Hi! We're Two Gay Expats

Hi gorgeous, and welcome to our LGBTQ+ travel blog! We're Andy and Trai, a gay couple traveling the world with PRIDE 🌈  …and our rescue dog, Pattie!

After meeting in San Francisco in 2018 and later moving to Chicago, we decided to quit our jobs in 2021, sell everything, and become Two Gay Expats. For over two years, we explored the best of gay Mexico while waiting for our house, Casa Cangrejo, to be completed in Tulum. We got married at The Beach Tulum in 2020 and became Mexican permanent residents in 2022.

Today, we continue to travel around Mexico and the world to show you our favorite places. If you'd like to follow our adventures, subscribe on YouTube and join us on Instagram.
